Exploring the Mechanics of Tissot Sport

Tissot Sport are recognised the world over for their Swiss craftsmanship and attention to detail. Across today's diverse collection of Tissot watches, design nuance is showcased by a range of different mechanisms,
technical capabilities and general aesthetic appeal.
A selection of Tissot timepieces possess a chronometer as a leading design feature, further enhancing the Tissot brand's respected reputation as the world's leader in traditional Swiss watches.
A certified chronometer is a high-precision watch capable of displaying the seconds measured by the instrument. It meets the highest standards of precision and reliability that have been tested and certified by an official neutral body: Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres – COSC.
The process of certifying a chronometer lasts several days, with each movement individually tested over this period in five different positions and at three different temperatures. In order to achieve certification, a mechanical movement with a diameter over 20mm must fulfil seven necessary criteria in areas including average daily rate, average variation of rate, the difference in rate between horizontal and vertical positions and the precision of a movement in case of temperature variations.
The thorough nature of these tests ensures only the highest standard watches gain the chronometer certificate. Each successful chronometer is identified by a number engraved on the movement and by a numbered certificate presented by the COSC.
The term ‘chronometer' is often confused with the functions performed by the similarly named chronograph and chronoscape. In fact, these terms should be applied to timekeeping instruments fitted with an additional mechanism that, when set in motion by corresponding push-buttons, allows the watch or instrument to measure the duration of an event. Despite the difference in function, chronographs and chronoscapes may be chronometer-certified but must meet the criteria set for the standard.
